About This Area

Overview

Chandpur District is an important district of Chattogram Division, Bangladesh. Located in southeastern Bangladesh at the confluence of the Meghna, Dakatia, and Padma rivers, the district covers an area of 1,704 square kilometers. According to the 2001 census, the population is 2,271,229. Chandpur town serves as the district headquarters and is an important river port city situated on the banks of the Meghna River. The district is bordered by Comilla District to the north, Lakshmipur District and the Meghna River to the south, Comilla and Noakhali districts to the east, and the Meghna and Padma rivers and Shariatpur District to the west. The district comprises 8 upazilas, 7 municipalities, and 88 union parishads. Chandpur is famous for Hilsa fish and dried fish and is often called the "Capital of Hilsa."

Economy

Chandpur\'s economy is robust in fisheries, agriculture, and river-based trade. The district is one of the leading Hilsa-producing centers in Bangladesh, accounting for a significant portion of the country\'s total Hilsa production. In addition to fisheries, sugarcane cultivation plays an important role in the district\'s economy. According to the Department of Agriculture Extension, the sugarcane cultivation target in Chandpur this season is 660 hectares, of which 653 hectares have already been planted. Faridganj, Matlab North, and Sadar upazilas have the highest sugarcane cultivation. This season\'s estimated production is 19,852.6 tonnes, higher than previous years. Local market prices range from Tk 30 to Tk 50 per piece, and farmers are earning daily profits of Tk 700 to Tk 800. However, 128 hectares of crops were damaged due to heavy rainfall and waterlogging. Potato cultivation is also an important cash crop in the district. Approximately 56,860 farmers cultivate potatoes on about 5,000 hectares, primarily in Chandpur Sadar, Matlab South, and Kachua upazilas. However, potato prices have recently dropped below production costs, causing significant losses for farmers. Old potatoes are selling for only Tk 7-8 per kilogram in local markets. Cold storage operators in Kachua upazila are struggling as farmers hesitate to withdraw their stored produce. Chandpur\'s 10 operational cold storages are holding 80,169 tonnes of potatoes against a maximum capacity of 80,250 tonnes. Consequently, the cultivation target for the current season has been reduced to 7,200 hectares, down 1,000 hectares from last year. The district\'s economic activities are supported by 1,088 primary schools, 249 high schools, and 47 colleges according to LGED data. Recently, a demand has been raised to establish an Export Processing Zone (EPZ) on 200-250 acres of land, which, if implemented, is expected to create employment for approximately 150,000 people.

Transport

Revolutionary developments are underway in Chandpur's transportation infrastructure. Chandpur city is an important river port situated on the Meghna River. From Dhaka, ferries take 3-4 hours to reach Chandpur, and from Barisal, 5-6 hours. The 'Meghna Express' train departs from Chittagong at 5:00 PM arriving at 10:00 PM, and the 'Sagorika Express' departs at 7:50 AM arriving at 1:55 PM. The government has initiated construction of the 8 km Shariatpur-Chandpur Bridge at an estimated cost of Tk 15,957 crore. This bridge will connect 21 southwestern districts with 11 southeastern districts and reduce the road distance from Chittagong to Khulna by approximately 90 kilometers. The proposed location for the bridge is Harina Ferry Ghat connecting to Sakhipur. South Korea's Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF) has expressed strong interest in financing this project with ultra-low-interest loans and 40-year repayment terms. Additionally, the country's first cable-stayed bridge—the Matlab-Gazaria Bridge—is planned over the Meghna-Dhonagoda River. The 1.85 km bridge will connect Matlab North in Chandpur with Gazaria in Munshiganj. Construction is expected to begin in the first half of 2026. The bridge will feature a six-lane connecting road including a four-lane main carriageway and two service lanes. The bridge will serve as a faster alternative route from Chandpur to Feni and Chattogram, acting as a bypass for the N-1 National Highway. Currently, direct bus services operate from Chandpur to Dhaka and other destinations across the country from the Saydabad bus terminal. According to LGED, the district's total road network includes 548.52 km of upazila roads, 856.19 km of union roads, and 4,336.75 km of village roads. The government has recently initiated re-excavation of the Khorddo canal in Shahrasti and Bishwakhal canal in Chandpur Sadar, which will play an important role in irrigation and flood control.

Education

Chandpur District has a significant number of educational institutions. According to LGED data, the district has 1,088 primary schools, 249 high schools, and 47 colleges. According to the 2001 census, the literacy rate in the district was 68 percent, which is believed to have increased significantly since then. Notable educational institutions include Chandpur Government College and Chandpur Government High School. A press briefing was recently held at Chandpur Government College campus ahead of the Prime Minister's visit, where local representatives raised demands for an EPZ and permanent embankment construction. BRAC operates education and healthcare programs in the district. Students from the district pursue higher education at institutions in Chittagong, Dhaka, and Comilla. Recent initiatives include expanding digital learning materials and multimedia classrooms to improve education quality.

Healthcare

Chandpur District has both government and private healthcare facilities. The district hospital and upazila health complexes provide healthcare services. Faridganj Upazila Health Complex was established in 1969 and currently has 50 beds. A floating hospital, the first of its kind in the country, has recently been launched for char residents of Chandpur. Named "Badsha Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz," this floating hospital is operated by the NGO "Friendship" and moored on the west bank of the Meghna River in Haimchar Upazila. The hospital provides free medical treatment including primary care, diagnosis, and surgery. Daily, 150-200 patients receive free medicine and treatment. The hospital has 32 staff members including 7 doctors. The project is expected to ensure healthcare for approximately 3.2 million people in Haimchar Upazila and the southern region. Health Secretary Md. Saidur Rahman stated that the floating hospital was established to address the shortage of healthcare facilities in remote char areas. Upazila health complexes and private clinics provide primary healthcare services.

Investment Potential

Chandpur District presents highly promising investment opportunities, particularly in the EPZ, agro-processing, and tourism sectors. Local residents and public representatives have long been demanding the establishment of an EPZ in Chandpur. According to Sheikh Farid Ahmed Manik, MP from Chandpur-3, an EPZ on approximately 200-250 acres could create employment for about 150,000 people in Chandpur and neighboring districts. An Economic Zone project has already been approved and implementation work is ongoing. In the agro-processing sector, there is immense potential for investment in fish processing and Hilsa export industries. Currently, various fish species and dried fish are supplied from Chandpur to different parts of the country, with opportunities to process and export to international markets. Sugarcane juice and molasses processing industries also offer investment potential as sugarcane cultivation continues to expand. Potato processing industries present investment opportunities as well. The district currently has 10 cold storages with a total capacity of 80,250 tonnes. Completion of the Shariatpur-Chandpur Bridge and Matlab-Gazaria Cable Bridge will transform Chandpur into a major transportation hub connecting southern and southeastern regions, making the district more attractive for investment. The district currently has 139 banks providing essential financial services for investors. The government's canal re-excavation initiatives will strengthen agricultural irrigation and flood control, strengthening the foundation for agriculture-based industries. River cruises and tourist centers along the Meghna River also offer investment potential.

Future Development

Future development priorities for Chandpur include the construction of the Shariatpur-Chandpur Bridge and Matlab-Gazaria Cable Bridge, EPZ establishment, permanent embankment construction, and canal re-excavation projects. The government is negotiating with South Korea and Japan to finance the Shariatpur-Chandpur Bridge. Completion of this bridge will position Chandpur as the connecting point between southwestern and southeastern Bangladesh. Construction of the country's first cable-stayed bridge, the Matlab-Gazaria Bridge, is expected to begin in the first half of 2026. Local residents have demanded the construction of a 60 km permanent embankment along the Meghna River to prevent erosion and protect agricultural land. The Prime Minister has inaugurated the re-excavation of the Khorddo canal in Shahrasti and the Bishwakhal canal in Chandpur Sadar, which will play important roles in irrigation and flood control. Finance Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed has announced plans to improve communication infrastructure. Implementation of the EPZ and Economic Zone projects will bring significant industrialization and employment generation to Chandpur. Government and private initiatives continue to modernize Chandpur's river port and tourism centers. Based on the success of the floating hospital, more floating healthcare centers are being planned, particularly for char areas. Expansion of fish processing and agricultural processing industries aims to increase export revenue from the district.
